Joseph Kabila launches Front for National Refoundation in Goma

Joseph Kabila announced the creation in Goma on 12 October of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation, a platform including officials from the AFC and M23. The initiative comes during Doha negotiations between Kinshasa and AFC-M23, as the former president faces a death sentence in absentia and US sanctions, according to Actualité.cd.

Joseph Kabila, former president of the DR Congo, announced on 12 October in Goma the creation of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a platform that includes officials from the Congo River Alliance (AFC) and M23, which are active in the east of the country, according to Actualité.cd.

In a statement published on 9 October, Joseph Kabila accused President Félix Tshisekedi of authoritarian excesses and of seeking to amend the Constitution to obtain a third term in 2028. The FRN says it wants to restore the institutions and constitutional order, amid continuing tensions between Kinshasa and armed groups in the east. The initiative is part of the creation of a new political-military front by Joseph Kabila against the Congolese authorities.
