Jordan Bardella proposes reserving free movement in the Schengen area for European Union nationals if his party wins the French elections in May. The leader also wants to authorise Frontex to push back boats and migrants arriving in Europe, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.

Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally, said on Monday 12 October 2026 in Spain that he wanted to reserve freedom of movement in the Schengen area for European citizens. “If we win the elections in May, France will propose a reform of the Schengen area,” he said, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.

The Schengen area, created by an agreement signed in 1985 and implemented since 1995, comprises 29 countries, including 25 European Union members and four states outside the Union. Nearly 450 million people move around it without systematic checks at internal borders, La Nouvelle Tribune notes.
