Gambian adviser says Jammeh loyalists still hold command posts

Ahmad Gitteh, a member of Gambia’s National People’s Party and an adviser to the Minister of Digital Economy, says officers loyal to former president Yahya Jammeh still hold command positions in the security forces. He says the ECOWAS mission’s withdrawal from The Gambia should await progress on security reforms and implementation of the truth commission’s recommendations, according to Kerr Fatou.

Ahmad Gitteh, a member of Gambia’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and an adviser to the Minister of Digital Economy, says officers loyal to former president Yahya Jammeh still hold command positions in the security forces. He defended the continued presence of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) in an interview with West Coast Radio.

Ahmad Gitteh also warned that these officers could have access to weapons and that an early withdrawal of regional troops could undermine the country’s security preparedness. His remarks come as President Adama Barrow recently claimed greater security powers than his predecessor, Yahya Jammeh, in a statement reported on 16 October.
