France imposes local curfews after riots

The French government has imposed night-time curfews for minors in several cities, while police have banned some demonstrations and restricted gatherings in Paris. The local measures, introduced after weekend riots, apply in Lille, Douai, Wattignies, Denain and Nice, among other places, according to French authorities cited by Reuters.

Paris police imposed night-time curfews around Place de la République and Les Halles after the riots, while demonstrations were banned in some parts of the capital from 8pm. The measures remain in force until 6am on Tuesday, according to Paris police.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ruled out a blanket curfew in Paris but said that, at this stage, imposing local restrictions was preferable. He also left open the possibility of a state of emergency and said his determination to restore order was “absolute”. Police announced a deployment to enforce the measures.
