Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile, his deputy Makebi Zulu and 16 other detainees appeared for the first time before three judges of the High Court of Zambia on treason charges. After more than 50 days in Mukobeko prison, their lawyers are seeking their release and challenging the length of their detention, Zambian Observer reports.
Eighteen Zambian opposition figures, including opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his deputy Makebi Zulu, appeared on Monday 19 October before three judges of the Lusaka High Court to answer treason charges, Zambian media outlet Zambian Observer reported. It was their first appearance on these charges since their arrest on 27 August.
The two leaders and the 16 other defendants had spent more than 50 days in Mukobeko maximum-security prison, north of Lusaka, according to the outlet. Eleven lawyers represented the defence at the hearing, which was presided over by judges Derrick Mulenga, Ireen Tilisa Wishimanga and Davies Chibwili.
The appearance follows several applications and postponements concerning their detention. The High Court had scheduled a review of the continued detention of the 18 people from 26 October, according to a report published on 2 October.
