Clement Nwankwo, executive director of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), has called on Nigerians to scrutinise candidates and defend their votes in the 2027 general elections. He made the call on Tuesday 20 October in Abuja, at the eighth annual public conference of the Just Friends Club of Nigeria, reports Dailytrust.
Nwankwo urged political parties to deploy representatives to every polling station to record the results and gather evidence against possible manipulation. He said popularity on social media was not enough to protect votes. Voters should choose candidates based on their records and programmes, rather than their ethnic or political affiliation.
Hussaini Abdu, the session’s chair, said Nigeria’s middle class was engaging less in collective action and turning to private solutions to make up for failures in public services, particularly electricity, water and education. He called on this section of the population to mobilise citizens and hold public officials to account.
The call comes amid a series of positions on the 2027 election: Nigeria’s electoral commission announced on 21 October that it planned to use artificial intelligence, after former electoral official Mike Igini described the poll as decisive for democracy on 20 October. 2027 election viewed as decisive for Nigerian democracy
